FlySafair is a South African low cost carrier. Using a modern, fuel efficient fleet, the airline hopes to offer South African air travellers super affordable rates on a sustainable basis. The airline is operated by Safair Operations, a well-established South African aviation company, and has operated scheduled flights since October 2014.
FlySafair initially launched their operations with only 6 flights per day between Cape Town and Johannesburg, ramping up to 10 flights per day over time. Today they operate the larges route network in South Africa. With flights to Cape Town, George, East London, Port Elizabeth, Lanseria, OR Tambo International and Durban, you can fly to just about every large city in South Africa with FlySafair. FlySafair also started flying on the Cape Town – Bloemfontein route from 8 July 2021. They also happen to be the most punctual airline in South Africa, despite operating the largest route network in the country.
FlySafair was the latest low cost airline to successfully get off the runway, despite a false start and a barrage of legal obstacles they faced during the course of 2013. Using a modern, fuel efficient fleet, the airline hopes to offer South African air travellers super affordable rates on a sustainable basis. The airline is operated by Safair Operations, a well-established South African aviation company, and has operated scheduled flights since October 2014.
The airline is the official carrier of South Africa’s national rugby team, the Springboks, and has recently been named the most on time airline in the world. As one of South Africa’s most innovative aviation brands, the airline is constantly finding ways of making the flight booking experience more convenient for their customers.
During 2017, the airline partnered with mobile phone payment provider Zapper, enabling passengers to pay for flights using their mobile phone. The airline has also partnered with RCS, as South African consumer credit provider, to make air travel more accessible for a greater number of South African travellers.
Flysafair has steadily been entrenching its position in the low cost carrier market during the course of 2017. During late November, the airline announced that it would seek regulatory approval to merge with SA Airlink, an embattled South African legacy carrier.
The move, if approved, would see the two airlines unite as the Airlink group of companies.
It is anticipated that the airlines will keep their respective brands, fleets, and management teams. Furthermore, no job losses are expected to occur as a result of the acquisition.
The move is anticipated to help reduce combined costs and increase operational efficiencies through economies of scale. It is also hoped that the move would position both airline brands for growth in 2018 and beyond.
The combined FlySafair Airlink network will connect 37 destinations across Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean islands, stimulating both regional trade and tourism in the process.
The move will also enable Airlink to meet and exceed its BBBEE targets.
Elmar Conradie, Safair’s current CEO, is expected to remain at the helm at Flysafair. The competition commission’s decision is expected to be announced during the first quarter of 2018.
Ticket sales launched on 29 July 2014. Upon launch, FlySafair offered one-way fares between Cape Town and Johannesburg for only R499, and from only R399 one-way between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
Checked baggage can be booked at a cost of R150 per piece of luggage, while seats can also be pre-booked at a rate of R40 per flight seat. In true low cost carrier fashion, meals and refreshments will also be sold onboard Flysafair flights.
