Air Zealand is New Zealand’s national airline and it is also New Zealand’s flag carrier. It began life in 1940 as Tasman Empire Airways Limited but then the government changed its name to Air New Zealand Limited. Air New Zealand’s original function was to provide flights over the Tasman to Australia. The airline was a government owned company until 1965, when the New Zealand government privatised it. This was in effect until 2001 but then the New Zealand government once again became the owner.
Air New Zealand has regular flights to cities in Asia, Oceania, the Americas, and Europe. Air New Zealand made history in December 2008 when they undertook the first commercial aviation test flight with sustainable 2nd generation bio-fuel. The airline uses its code-share agreement with South African Airways to connect South Africans to Auckland via Sydney and Perth.
Air New Zealand was established in 1940 as Tasman Empire Airways Limited. The airline started by only operating trans-Tasman flights between Australia and New Zealand. The Tasman Empire Airways Limited was bought by the New Zealand government in 1965, after which it was re-branded as Air New Zealand. In 1989 Air New Zealand was privatised, but returned to government ownership in 2001. Air New Zealand carries around 14 million passengers annually.
Their airline fleet consists of 99 aircraft. Most of these are Boeing and there are 12 Airbus aircraft. The airline’s fleet consists predominantly of Boeing B777-300ER, B777-200ER, B787-9, Airbus A320 and A320 aircraft.
Air New Zealand is in the process of launching their “Skycouch” initiative. Currently passengers travelling with children aged up to two years old have to put their children on their laps, secured with a seat belt extension. Now the airline has developed a baby pod which allows for infants to stay in a sleeping position for the duration of their flight. The airline believes that this will help relax young passengers and their parents and make them more comfortable for the duration of their flight.

Economy class passengers are allowed one carry-on bag that may weigh up to 7kg. Premium economy and business class passengers are allowed 2 pieces of baggage that may weigh a combined weight of 14kg.
Checked baggage
Economy class passengers are allowed 23kg of checked baggage, one piece of baggage only. Premium economy passengers are allowed two pieces of baggage that may weigh up to 23kg each. Business class passengers are allowed three pieces of baggage that may weigh up to 23kg each.
Passengers are asked to check in up to 3 hours before departure. Online check in opens 24 hours before departure.
