Qantas Airways Limited, or Qantas for short, is the national airline of Australia and nicknamed ‘The Flying Kangaroo’. Originally spelt QANTAS, and acronym for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services, the airline is based in Sydney, with its main hub at Sydney Airport.
Qantas is Australia’s largest airline, and the second oldest continuously operating airline in the world. In 2008, Qantas was voted the third best airline in the world, with Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific taking first and second honours respectively.
The Flying Kangaroo, as Qantas is affectionately known, operates flights to 82 destinations on 6 continents around the world. In South Africa, Qantas only operates flights out of Johannesburg, but has a codeshare agreement with SAA & Comair, which allows clients to seamlessly connect from Cape Town, Durban, East London & PE to Australia & New Zealand via Johannesburg.
Qantas has received numerous awards and accolades since its privatisation in 1993, and has since then been one of the most profitable airlines in the world. It was also recently voted the third best airline in the world in the 2008 World Airlines Awards, preceded only by Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific. The airline has also received awards for Best First Class Lounge, Best Airlines Australasia, Best Economy Class onboard catering and Best Regional Airline Australasia.
Qantas operates a fleet of 237 aircraft; including 40 aircraft by Jet star Airways and 45 from other Qantas Link branded airlines.
