SAA is South Africa’s national carrier. South African Airways is one of the top airlines in the world. The airline owns and operated the largest fleet in Africa. SAA has a frequent flyer program called Voyager and it is part of the Star Alliance, the world’s second largest global airline alliances. The airline flies to 37 destinations in 26 countries across Europe, Africa, North and South America, Asia and Australasia. The only other global carriers to operate flights to all six continents are Delta Air Lines, Etihad, Emirates, Korean Air, Qantas, United Airlines, Singapore and Qatar Airways.
2018 has brought some significant routes changes for SAA. During mid January, the airline announced the implementation of a far reaching route rationalisation exercise aimed at increasing load factors and group-wide efficiencies, among other key objectives.
The Cape Town to Johannesburg route, as well as the Johannesburg to Durban route, were impacted significantly. The bulk of the airline’s domestic flights to Durban were handed over to subsidiary airline Mango Airlines as of Monday, 22 January 2018. The airline will also be handing over around 30% of its flight schedule between Cape Town and Joburg to Mango.
In an attempt to turn around its financial position, he embattled national carrier has also shed some of its international routes and cut its leased fleet. Where wide-body aircraft have been proven to be inefficient, these are being redeployed along regional and international routes instead.
The airline has also recent announced an inter-airline agreement with TAAG Angola Airways, aimed to improve air connectivity between Cape Town and Luanda.
According to TAAG Airlines, the codeshare agreement with South African Airways will also enable them to offer new flight services to destinations such as Lusaka in Zambia, Harare in Zimbawe and Hong Kong.
FlySAA, or SAA for short, is the national flag carrier of South Africa. The airline was established in 1934, when the SA Government acquired Union Airways. Headquartered at Airways Park, Or Tambo International Airport, and flying to nearly 40 destinations globally, it is Africa’s second-largest carrier in terms of the number of passengers transported per year.
SAA also owns low cost carrier FlyMango, and is strategically partnered with SA Express. Together with SA Airlink, a privately owned airline, these airlines have a 3-way code-sharing agreement in place. FlySAA has been a member of the Star Alliance since 2006, and currently has international code-sharing agreements in place with Air Mauritius, Air India, El A1, Emirate, Etihad, Jet Airways, JetBlue, and Virgin Atlantic, among others. Today, the airline transports over 8 million passengers per annum, while Mango carries over 2 million passengers each year.
As of Q3 2014, the FlySAA fleet includes various Airbus models, as well as 11 Boeing 737-800s, a Boeing 737-200 and two Boeing 737-300s. Beyond 2014, the airline was expected to upgrade its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft. However, in accordance with a 12-year turnaround plan, a tender for new generation long haul aircraft was recently withdrawn.
Carry-on baggage
Economy class passengers are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage not exceeding 8kg. Business class passengers are allowed two pieces of baggage of 8kg each.
Checked baggage
For domestic flights, SAA allows one free bag of checked luggage, weighing 23 kg, for Economy Class, and one free piece of checked baggage, weighing 32 kg for Business Class passengers. For most international, and regional flights, SAA offer 2 pieces of free checked baggage, each weighing 23 kg for Economy Class passengers, and 32 kg for Business Class passengers.
SAA passengers can check in online through the airline’s website. Online check in opens 24 hours before departure and closes 2 hours before departure. Passengers can also check in at South African airways’ counters at the airport, the old fashioned way. Domestic check in opens 2 hours before departure and international check in 3 hours before departure.
South African Airways operates a two tier cabin class model on their domestic, regional and international flights. Passengers can book flights in either economy or business class on all South African Airways flights.
The airline runs an all inclusive service. The cost of on board food and drink is included in your airfare.
The airline only allows service dogs to fly inside the passenger cabin. Service dogs fly at not additional cost. All other pets will be accommodated in the cargo bay at an additional cost.
