KLM flies more than 23 million passengers to 90 destinations in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe every year. The airline’s headquarters are in Amsterdam and has more than 30 000 employees. The business has a strong environmental focus and received an award for their environmental strategy in Airline Business’ Airline Strategy Awards. Another one of their focus areas is punctuality: the Schiphol airport gave KLM.co.za the 2008 award for Punctuality. The airline belongs to the SkyTeam Alliance.
KLM operates a daily service to both Johannesburg and Cape Town from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The airline also uses their code share agreement with Kulula to connect travellers from Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth to Amsterdam via Johannesburg.
The company has been in existence since 1919 and have kept their name unchanged since then. Albert Plesman was one of KLM’s founders and he stayed with the company until his death. KLM is similar to many other European airlines: the end of WWI created a demand for aviation services and the company emerged to fulfil this demand. KLM used planes from Dutch companies; the Fokker F.2 is one such plane they used.
KLM used air races to solidify their presence in the aviation industry. One such race was the MacRobertson England-Australia Air Race that used a Douglas DC-2 monoplane. WWII was a challenge for KLM: the British denied them from flying many of their regular routes and they also sided with other airlines to prevent KLM and their newly created Royal Dutch Indies Airlines from becoming too competitive. This created a reason to find other routes, the company started expanding to the Caribbean and Latin America.
The end of WWII meant KLM could resume its European service; they also became the first European airline to fly to New York.
KLM and Air France merged to form Air France-KLM, a holding company, in 2004. The two companies’ operating revenues and passenger-kilometres makes Air France-KLM the world’s largest airline company. They remain two separate companies; each has its own brand, identity and trade name.
Currently, KLM has a fleet of 115 aircraft, of which the majority are Boeing 737-800’s, Boeing 737-700’s and Boeing 747-400M’s. The airline uses Boeing 747-400s to fly to and from South Africa.
