09/04/2018After a 16 year absence over the skies of South Africa, Alitalia has made a return. Alitalia’s first flight between Johannesburg and Rome landed in O.R. Tambo International in Johannesburg on the 8th of April 2018. The airline will operate 4 weekly return flights between the City of Gold and the Eternal City. Flights will be operated on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This is the only direct flight from Johannesburg to Rome, and indeed the only direct flight from South Africa to Italy.
Carry on baggage
Economy class passengers are allowed one piece of carry-on baggage that must weigh no more than 8kg. Business class passangers are allowed 2 pieces of carry-on baggage, their combined weight of which cannot exceed 8kg.
Checked baggage
Economy class passengers are allowed one piece of checked baggage that must weigh 23kg or less. Premium economy passengers are allowed two pieces of checked baggage that must weigh 23kg or less each. Business class passengers are allowed two pieces of checked baggage that must weigh 32kg or less each.
Alitalia passengers can check in via the airline’s mobile application, via the airline’s website or up to 60 minutes before departure at the airport. Check in closes 60 minutes before departure on international flights and 35 minutes before departure on domestic flights. Boarding gates close 15 minutes before departure.

Alitalia allows dogs, cats, ferrets and canaries to travel with you in the hold of the aircraft at an extra cost. Recognised guide dogs are allowed to travel with its owner free of charge.
