Iberia Airlines is a Spanish airline that is also its native country’s flag carrier. It has existed since 1927 and the Spanish government played a key role in its formation. The company belongs to the Iberia Group, which is known for their prowess in the transport industry.
The airline carried 28 million passengers in 2006 and they have reported a profit for 13 consecutive years. To date, more than 500 million people have used Iberia to reach their destination of choice. The hub of the airline is in Madrid at the Madrid-Barajas Airport and Iberia accounts for most of the airport’s traffic.
Within South Africa Iberia Airlines currently only operates flights to OR Tambo International in Johannesburg. The airline has however stated that they are planning on reintroducing flights from their hub in Madrid to Cape Town. The airline has a code-share agreement with British Airways Comair which it uses to connect travellers from East London, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth to Madrid and beyond via Johannesburg.
Iberia Airlines flies to 82 international and 38 domestic destinations. They serve 44 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. The airline has code share agreements with many other airlines and they use these agreements to offer their customers flights to 90 other destinations throughout the world. American Airlines, Meridiana, S7 Airlines, Vueling Airlines, and Comair are only a few of the airlines with whom Iberia Airlines have code-share agreements.Iberia flies to cities such as Johannesburg in South Africa, Bucharest in Romania, Guatemala City in Guatemala, and Tel Aviv in Israel.
Iberia currently operates a fleet of 79 aircraft and it has a further 45 on order. The airline’s fleet is only made up of Airbus airplanes. The fleet mainly consists of Airbus A340-600, A321-200 and A319-100 aircraft.
Iberia and Qatar Airways have expanded their codeshare agreement. The new agreement will open up new Qatar Airways destination to Iberia passengers. The destinations include Brazil, Colombia, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
Carry-on baggage
Passengers are allowed one carry-on bag. That bag will need to be within the following dimensions: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.
Checked baggage
Iberia passengers are allowed 23kg of free checked baggage. Any bags that weigh more than 23kg will be charged extra per kilogram. Bags that weigh more than 32kg will not be allowed on the plane
The check-in time for Iberia flights ends, for all passengers, 45 minutes before scheduled departures. Online check in is available. Online check in opens 24 hours and closes 3 hours prior to departure.
Iberia Airlines has both economy and business class cabins on all their flights.
