Virgin Atlantic Airways is a British airline owned by business magnate Sir Richard Branson, forming part of his highly successful and recognised Virgin Group. Branson is, however, not the sole owner of the airline, with 51% of its shares. The other 49% is owned by Singapore Airlines. Virgin Atlantic operates flights to most of the top destinations in the world, including North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
The majority of Virgin Atlantic’s flights operate from London Heathrow, with the remainder operating from London Gatwick and Manchester Airport. There is one seasonal flight which operates from Glasgow International Airport. The agreement will allow Virgin Atlantic passengers to book a single ticket for their entire journey. The agreement will link Virgin Atlantic international flights with kulula domestic flights. Passengers will only have to check in their bags once and they will only need to use one ticket when they transfer from kulula to Virgin Atlantic or vice versa.
Virgin Atlantic was established in 1984 as British Atlantic Airways. The maiden flights, between Gatwick and the Newark Liberty International Airport, took place on June 22, 1984. The airline is controlled by a holding company, Virgin Atlantic Limited. Co-founders for the airline were American-born lawyer, Randoldph Field, and former chief pilot, Alan Hellary.
The airline’s fleet currently sits at 40 aircraft, including 12 Boeing 747-400’s, and 11 Airbus A340-800’s.
