SA Express is a state owned regional airline that operates flights to and from both large and small cities and towns across Southern Africa. The airline mainly operates flights on low volume routes, they are the sole airline operating flights on many of their routes. The airline operates domestic flights in South African, as well as regional flights to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the DRC. South African Express (SAX), typically referred to as SA Express, is a government owned South African airline operating independently of SAA. Express operates a fleet of 24 aircraft flying to 19 destinations. The airline enjoys a strategic alliance with SA Airline and SAA, and has been operating since 1994. SA Express is a member of the Star Alliance, and is headquartered at OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park. Its primary air hubs include the Cape Town, King Shaka and OR Tambo International Airports.
The airline flies to and from a number of small airports, on small volume routes. They therefore operate smaller aircraft compared to South African Airways and British Airways. The airline operates a fleet of 24 aircraft:
10, Bombardier Q400 jets with a maximum capacity of 74 passengers.
4, Bombardier CRJ 700 jets with a maximum capacity of 70 passengers.
10, Bombardier CRJ 200 turboprop aircraft with a maximum capacity of 50 passengers.
Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan stated in his budget speech that he is considering merging the boards of South African airways and SA Express to cut costs. There has been no official announcement as of yet from the minister as to when and how the boards of the two airlines will be merged. There has also been talk of selling off a stake in the airline to private investors. However no such deal has been made as of yet.
Carry on baggage
Passengers are entitled to carry a single piece of cabin luggage on board, with the weight maximum being 7kg. The total dimension of the baggage items may not exceed 115cm, and must fit into allocated storage spaces for safety reasons.
Checked baggage
Passengers are allowed to check in 20kg of baggage on SA Express flights.
