Air Botswana Corporation is the national flag carrier of Botswana, and operates scheduled domestic and regional flights to various destinations within Africa. Its main base is at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone. The airline recently relaunched flights between Cape Town and Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Air Botswana offers flights from South Africa to four towns and cities within Botswana, Lonely Planet’s best destination to travel to in 2016.
Air Botswana’s routes between South Africa and Botswana change on a constant basis. The airline reinstated their Cape Town – Maun flights in March of 2016 after cancelling the route twice before. Currently their post popular routes are Gaborone – Johannesburg, Kasane – Johannesburg and Maun – Johannesburg. The airline competes with SA Airlink on their Cape Town – Maun, Johannesburg – Kasane and Maun – Kasane routes. The Cape Town – Maun route has the potential op opening up a tourism stream between the Okavango Delta and Cape TOwn, two of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations.
Air Botswana is the national flag carrier airline of Botswana. The airline is also wholly owned by Botswana’s government. The airline operates domestic and regional passenger flights within Botswana and Southern Africa. The airline’s base is situated at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone. There has been various attempts to privatise the airline, all of which have failed. The airline is planning to expand their network over the next 5 years. The increased popularity of Botswana as a top safari destination has increased demand for scheduled flights from Maun to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Currently, the Air Botswana fleet consists of three ATR42-500’s, one ATR72-500, and two Avro RJ85 jets. Air Botswana signed a deal in 2008 with ATR for two 68-seat ATR 72–500 aircraft. The aircraft were delivered a year later and today they are used on the Kasane – Johannesburg and Francistown – Johannesburg routes.
Air Botswana has increased the baggage allowance to 30kg on all regional routes. The new rule has come into immediate effect. This amounts to an increase of 7kg of free checked in baggage per traveller.
Carry-on baggage
You are allowed to carry 1 bag with you on the flight for no charge. The maximum weight must not exceed 5 kg. Air Botswana allows passengers to take some non-traditional travelling items with them to their destinations including golf clubs and musical instruments.
Checked baggage
Passengers are allowed 30kg checked baggage on Air Botswana’s regional flights. Passengers may have two pags but the combined weight may not exceed 30kg.
The airline does not have an online check-in facility. Passengers are asked to check in at the airport at least two hours before their flight departs.
Air Botswana operates a single class cabin on their flights to and from South Africa. Economy class is the only option for Air Botswana customers.
Air Botswana operates an all inclusive service. This means that all food and drinks costs are included in your airfare. Air Botswana usually gives passengers a packet of biltong as a snack on their flights.
Air Botswana does allow passengers to fly their pets along with them in the cargo section of the aircraft. Passengers will need to contact the airline directly to book a section in the cargo hold for their pets.
