Launched in 2020 by kulula founder Gidon Novick, and ex-Uber executive Jonathan Ayache, Lift has brought a unique and trendy offering to South African travellers. Lift’s fully-flexible ticket option which allows you to change or cancel your ticket without incurring any penalties, although any differences in taxed and fares will apply, is what sets them apart.
The airline first launched with flights on the Cape Town – Johannesburg & Johannesburg – George routes. The George route was dropped after the summer season ended in January 2021. Lift currently operates six daily scheduled flights between OR Tambo International in Johannesburg and Cape Town International. The first flights take to the sky at 07h00 and planes touch down at 22h00 after their last flight of the day.
Lift Airlines first made national headlines when the airline asked South Africans to help them come up with a name for the airline. Despite it being the year of lockdowns and travel restrictions, the low-cost airline launched on the 10th of December 2020, at the start of South Africa’s holiday season.
The airline received 25 000 name suggestions, Lift being suggested by 8 contestants who all now have their names inscribed on the side of the airline’s aircraft, they also received a year of free flights.
Lift sets itself apart with its fully-flexible ticket options. The airline allows travellers to mae changes or cancel their tickets without incurring any airline penalty fees. Travellers will only need to pay for any differences in fares and taxes when changing the date of their ticket. Passengers who cancel their flights will have the full value of their ticket moved into their Lift wallets for future use.
Lift uses the 4th generation Airbus A320 aircraft. Their A320s are some of the most technologically advanced aircraft in operation today.
All Lift aircraft are fitted with leather seats‚ large tray tables and generous leg-room of up to 33 inches. Lift aircraft are can seat 174 passengers. All seats offer a minimum of 30 inches of leg-room‚ and up to 33 inches in the front of the cabin.
Lift Airlines will start flying between Johannesburg & Durban from the 26th of October 2023. Flights will operate three times a week from OR Tambo International airport to King Shaka International airport & vice versa. Both Economy & Business Class seats are available on the new route. 04/03/2021Domestic travellers are not allowed to carry a takeaway coffee or meal on board flights, receive food or buy anything to eat on domestic flights. This is thanks to a new on-board food ban which has been imposed by the government. According to the government, the new rules have been put in place to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Only bottled water can be brought onto and sold on all domestic flights.
Lift allows one piece of hand luggage at 7 kg to be brought on-board free of charge. Checked baggage has to be purchased separately at a cost of R100 for one bag, R250 for two bags and R450 for three bags. Each piece of luggage can weigh up to 23kg.
Online check in opens 24 hours before departure and check in at the airport opens 2 hours before departure. Airport check in closes 45 minutes before departure. Bags have to be dropped at bag drop counters 45 minutes before departure. Boarding closes 15 minutes before departure.
Lift only operates economy class cabins on all their flights.
Lift has partnered with Vida e Caffe & Grumpy Snacks for in flight coffee and snacks catering. Passengers on evening flights will get access to free wine-tasting‚ featuring a selection of South Africa’s top wineries.
Emotional support/service animals are allowed in the cabin of the aircraft. Lift does allow pets to be carried in the hold through BidAir Services.
